Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it called The Balclavas?

Because we're shy about playing in public! See "Whats with the name?" for the background.

What does The Balaclavas do?

The Balaclavas is all about providing a welcoming and supportive environment for adults who are either just starting out, or who are perhaps returning to instruments once played in earlier years. It's a class to learn tunes on your chosen instrument and practice playing them in the company of like-minded others, at a beginner's pace.

As the Cobblestone attracts a world-wide audience, it can also be a place for people from different countries - sometimes very accomplished musicians - to learn the basics of Irish music and perhaps share some of their own music. Occasionally there might even be a song or two.

Playing with others is completely different to playing alone. Getting experience in joining in, keeping rhythm and maybe even starting a set are all vital steps in building confidence and capability in playing traditional Irish music.

The first part of the class is usually for learning one or two tunes at a slow pace. The second part is usually a half-speed session, for practicing recently learned tunes or old favourites.

What instrument can I play?

Whatever instrument you choose - all the usual Irish traditional instruments are usually present and occasionally there might be a special guest - cello, double base or clarinet. Surprise us!

What if I can't read music?

Don't worry - neither can most of the Balaclavas. We firmly believe that the very best way to learn tunes is by ear, but of course, not everyone can manage that straight off.

Tunes are always available in 'ABC' notation. That's a kind of 'half way house' of formal notation - it gives the notes to be played in 'plain English' and it's up to you to remember most of the phrasing. There's generally an audio recording available to help you match those notes with the tune.

For those who can read 'proper' music, stave notation is readily available on line for thousands of tunes. Check out The Session.org

What does it not do?

The Balaclavas can teach you tunes and build your confidence in playing with others, but it won't teach you how to play your chosen instrument. Usually those attending have a basic familiarity with their instrument and are generally taking lessons from an advanced player, for technique and style.

The focus is on learning tunes at a slow pace, so The Balaclavas might not suit those who want to practice musical accompaniment, be that percussion or strings.

The most important thing is if you have an instrument and you want to give it a go, you're more than welcome. Learn some tunes, keep the rhythm, go at the speed of the person who starts and get better together: thats what the Balaclavas is all about.
